THE DEAD SEA

The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and it`s main tributary is the Jordan River. It`s surface and shores are 430.5 metres below the sea level, Earth`s lowest elevation on land.

Some question and answers you need to know before you plan a visit:

1. Why it is called dead sea?

We all arise with a question that why it is called \”dead\” sea? Well, the answer to this is crystal clear that this Sea has no life in itself. The sea does not contain any fishes as this sea is so salty and it does not supports proper Marine Life. In times of flood the Dead Sea can drop from it\’s usual 35% to 30% or lower.

2. Is it safe to swim in the Dead Sea?

In reality, it is nearly impossible to swim in the Dead Sea, beca
use of the high salt content of the water, people who bathe in the Dead Sea can actually float on the surface of the water. The unique salt and chemical content of the waters of the Dead Sea make it toxic upon contact to fish and nearly all marine life.

3. Why is it called Sea, if it is a lake?

In actuality, it is a salt lake. It has a single source, the Jordan River, and is not connected to the Ocean.

4. What makes it salty?

Salt crystals accumulate on the shore of the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest lakes on Earth. Along the shores, salt buildup collect in rocky ridges, peaks and towers, and visitors find that the Dead Sea\’s extra~salty water is so buoyant that they can practically sit on it\’s surface.

5. Can you take salt from the Dead Sea?

You can\’t just scoop~up the salt from the Dead Sea. Besides that there are many shops from where you can take the salt which is nicely packed for you to take as a souvenir. You can pound it into crystals when you get home.

*SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT DEAD SEA;

1. The Dead Sea is old. It is more than 3 million years old since the Biblical times.
2. Despite being called the Dead Sea, the water~body is actually a hyper~saline lake and not a sea! (as told you above).
3. Unfortunately, the Dead Sea is disappearing at an alarming rate! (and it is endangered, must visit it once).
4. The water, salt, and mud of the Sea is high in minerals with many health benefits!
5. Due to its healing and rejuvenating powers, the Dead Sea is probably the oldest spa in the World!

* Why is it endangered?

The reason you must visit this mysterious creation on this World is that declining sea water level of the Sea is the decreasing inflow of freshwater into the lake, which has reduced from around 1,250 million cubic m/year in 1950 to approximately 260 million cubic m/year in 2010. The Dead Sea\’s primary water source used to be the Lower Jordan River.
